Jac Haudenschild Roars in San Jose Finale By Richard Day SAN JOSE, CA (August 28) - Jac Haudenschild had an announcement to go along with his flag-to-flag victory in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature at San Jose Speedway Saturday. "We ran a couple of races back home last week, but we'll be with the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series for the rest of the year," Jac said. "What a way to start it off." "The Wild Child," who has run half of the series' 56 events this season, also won an "A" Feature at I-55 Raceway on July 24th. Haudenschild earned the right to start the 30-lap main event outside the front row by following Friday's Preliminary Feature winner, Danny Lasoski, across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. "The Wild Child" raced wheel-to-wheel with Lasoski down the front straightaway as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, took the lead with a high move in turn one, and never looked back. Haudenschild was racing away from "The Dude" during the second lap when Andy Hillenburg and Blake Robertson collided in the fourth corner, breaking the front axle on the #15R BR Motorsports sprinter. Randy Hannagan, the 1993 San Jose Speedway champion, took the high line into turn one to pass Kevin Gobrecht for third as the green flag replaced the yellow. Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Sammy Swindell steered his #1 Channellock Stealth deep in the fourth corner to pass Gobrecht for fourth place one lap later. Front suspension damage on the #7K Kele & Associates Maxim forced Brooke Tatnell to stop in turn four late in the sixth lap. Gobrecht lost fifth place when he took the #93 Amoco Maxim for a spin in the second corner early in the sixth lap. Hillenburg, who drove his #2 Luxaire J&J past 10 cars during the first five laps jumped the cushion in turn four as the race resumed. A broken Jacobs Ladder kept Andy from restarting. Tim Shaffer, who passed seven cars during the first five laps, steered the #11H Vivarin Maxim into the high groove in the third corner to pass Mark Kinser and Donny Schatz for seventh place late in lap nine. Randy Tiner stopped in turn two with a flat left front tire two laps later. Swindell, winner of three Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main events at San Jose, took the low line into the fourth corner to pass Hannagan for third place late in lap 17. Haudenschild was a half- straightaway ahead of Lasoski when he entered lapped traffic the next time around. Swindell caught "The Dude" in turn three and raced with him through the fourth corner five laps later. Lasoski kept the #83 Beef Packers Eagle ahead of the three-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion, however. Brake problems caused Brad Furr to stop in turn two early in the 24th lap, setting up a six-lap dash to the checkered flag. Johnny Herrera and Steve Kinser exchanged fifth place during the next three laps. Mark Kinser and Donny Schatz passed Kinser when his #11 Quaker State Maxim bicycled in the fourth corner late in lap 28. "The King of the Outlaws" came back to claim seventh place with an inside move past Schatz in turn two the next time around. Haudenschild took the checkered flag as Lasoski raced through turn four. It was the 34th "A" Feature victory of his Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career. "The track got pretty racy," Haudenschild said. "It widened out for the feature, and that allowed us to get by the traffic pretty good. My guys (Dean Bruns, Dave Kinnard and Ryan Krikke) worked really hard, changing the car to keep up with the track, and the Elden Motorsports Maxim felt really good." Lasoski's eighth runner-up run of the season pushed him to within 76 points of Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series leader Mark Kinser with 14 events remaining on the schedule. Swindell finished in third place, ahead of Hannagan, Herrera, the Kinser cousins - Mark and Steve - Schatz, Shaffer and 22nd-starting Brent Kaeding. Swindell received his third Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the 48-car qualifying session with a 13.727-second lap around the semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will sanction the Seventh Annual Harvest Classic at picturesque Calistoga Speedway Friday through Sunday. WoO
