Herrera switches to World Supersport 300 for 2018
Maria Herrera will switch from Moto3 to the Supersport 300 World Championship for 2018.
Herrera endured a tough 2017 campaign in Moto3 with the AGR Team, scoring just one point – which was awarded post-race after a penalty for Nicolo Bulega in Argentina – from the first 12 rounds.
A shoulder injury sustained in a heavy fall during warm-up at Misano forced her out of the San Marino and Aragon grands prix before AGR pulled out of the series.
She contested the Australian and Malaysian races in place of the injured Albert Arenas at Aspar before making a wildcard outing with Cuna de Campeones in Valencia, where she finished 26th.
Next year, Herrera will join defending champion team MS Racing Yamaha alongside Daniel Valle, who finished fifth in the inaugural World Supersport 300 standings.
She will be one of two female riders on the grid alongside former grand prix rival Ana Carrasco, who made history this year when she won at Portimao, making her the first ever woman to win a world championship motorcycle road race.
A total of 36 riders are set to line-up on the grid for the season opener in Aragon, with Austrian manufacturer KTM joining Kawasaki, Honda and Yamaha on the grid, having sat out the 2017 season.
Reigning champion Marc Garcia will move to the CEV Moto3 series in 2018 with four-time 250cc and double World Superbike champion Max Biaggi's team.
